How to Fix a Blown Window

If a window has gone cloudy, misty, or has condensation trapped between the panes, it has usually “blown.” In most cases, that means the sealed unit has failed, moisture has entered between the panes, and the proper fix is not wiping the glass down but replacing the sealed unit or, in some cases, the window itself.

At K&S Bespoke Builds, we always advise treating a blown window as more than a cosmetic issue. Once the seal has failed, the glass is no longer performing as it should, which can affect clarity, comfort, and insulation. Our approach is to look at the condition of the existing window, the frame, and the style of the property before recommending the right replacement option.

What is a blown window?

A blown window is usually a double glazed unit where the seal between the panes has broken down. That failed seal allows moisture into the gap, which leads to misting or condensation that cannot be cleaned from either side of the glass. If the condensation is between the panes rather than on the room side or outside face, that is the clearest sign the unit itself has failed.

This is different from normal surface condensation caused by high humidity indoors. Surface condensation can often be improved with ventilation, trickle vents, or a dehumidifier. A blown window is different because the problem is inside the sealed unit, not on the surface.

Signs your window has blown

The most common signs are:

  • mist or fog trapped between the panes

  • water droplets inside the glass unit

  • a cloudy appearance that never fully clears

  • a drop in thermal performance around the window

  • draughts or signs that the seals are no longer doing their job properly

If the problem has appeared recently on a fairly new installation, it can also point to a manufacturing or installation fault. Which? notes that failed seals in the first couple of years may be linked to errors in manufacture or fitting, rather than simple age and wear.

Can you fix a blown window yourself?

There is not a reliable DIY fix for a blown double glazed unit. Some people look for ways to clear the mist, but drying the gap or trying quick cosmetic fixes does not restore the original airtight seal or the insulating performance of the unit. Which? also notes that drilling out misted glass is generally only a short-term fix when it works at all.

That is why we do not recommend treating a blown window as a home DIY job. Checkatrade notes that this kind of repair usually requires specific tools and is normally better handled by a trained professional. In practice, the right solution depends on whether only the glass unit has failed or whether the surrounding frame is also worn, damaged, draughty, or no longer fit for purpose.

How to fix a blown window properly

The proper fix is usually one of two options.

The first is replacing the sealed glass unit while keeping the existing frame, provided the frame is still in good condition. This is often the most cost-effective solution and is commonly enough to restore the window’s appearance and performance.

The second is full window replacement. This is the better option when the frame is old, warped, damaged, letting in draughts, or no longer giving the home the insulation and security it should. Signs that double glazing may need replacing include visible seal damage, persistent condensation between panes, leaks, sticking windows, and cold spots near the window.

At K&S Bespoke Builds, we carry out window replacement with a focus on long-term performance, not just appearance. On our window replacement service, we explain that replacing old windows with modern, energy-efficient units can improve insulation, reduce draughts and noise, and make the home lighter and more comfortable throughout the year. We also install high-performance Liniar PVCu systems, with options designed to suit both traditional homes and modern properties.

When to call a professional

We recommend calling a professional as soon as the condensation is clearly trapped between the panes or the room starts to feel colder around the window. A proper inspection can confirm whether the issue is just the sealed unit or whether the frame, hardware, or installation also needs attention.

This is especially important if several windows are showing the same problem, if the windows are difficult to open or lock, or if the property already suffers from draughts and heat loss. In those cases, repairing one pane alone may not be the best long-term answer.

Our recommendation

When it comes to how to fix a blown window, our honest recommendation is to get a professional assessment rather than spend money on short-lived fixes. If the frame is sound, replacing the failed sealed unit may be enough. If the whole window is underperforming, a full replacement is usually the smarter investment.

At K&S Bespoke Builds, we are a family-run business based in Reading, Berkshire, with more than 40 years of hands-on experience. We take the time to assess the existing windows, the character of the property, and what the finished result needs to achieve before recommending the right option. That means a practical solution, a cleaner finish, and windows built to last.
